Welcome to Boss Betty, a business news site focused on gender equality in the workplace. We aim to build a better, fairer corporate world by highlighting the work women do across industries, and by exploring the barriers to equality and how to break them.
You can expect to see one to three new posts on Boss Betty every weekday to start, with coverage including profiles of female power brokers, analysis of how best to create an inclusive work culture, deep dives into any and all gender-related work data, news you can use to better yourself professionally and plenty more.
If you check out the industry drop-down, you’ll see that the sectors we’re focusing on are Advertising & Media, Energy, Finance, Law, Manufacturing & Retail, Real Estate, Science & Healthcare and Technology & Engineering. One of our goals, if you’ll indulge us, is to provide trade news with attitude — that is, an industry insider’s take with an edge, not ye olde dry, boring content, rife with impenetrable jargon.
Now, most of you are likely familiar with the dismal numbers that make Boss Betty’s existence necessary, but here’s a refresher in case you need it:
- Just 5.4% of S&P 500 companies are run by women and Fortune’s new Global 500 list shows only 2.8% of women are at the helm of the world’s top companies.
- The World Economic Forum estimates it will take 202 years to achieve full economic gender equality.
- The gender pay gap in the U.S. ranges from just 53-cents on the dollar for Latinx women compared to white men to 80-cents for white women.
While there are loads of lifestyle magazines and websites for women, there are no major publications solely dedicated to women in big business. Zero. And there is far too little business news examining the complexities of what it means to be a woman operating in corporate corridors across race and ethnicity, sexual orientation and class.
Over the past couple of years, we have seen renewed energy in the fight for workplace equality — now is the time to up our game. Big time. We have a long way to go, but here we are — and we are in this.
We are so excited to do our part and hope you support us by becoming a member of Boss Betty — you can choose how much you want to contribute to our newsroom. Join here. And, you can read more about Boss Betty here.
