Harvey Weinstein, sitting in a Buffalo, New York prison with a parole hearing set, per the Department of Corrections, for September 2039, assumedly heard the news that a tentative $19 million deal settling two lawsuits against him was reached. Who knows what his reaction was, but attorneys for six of the plaintiffs noted that the settlement does not force Weinstein to take any responsibility for his actions or pay out any money himself, the BBC reported. The lawyers, Douglas Wigdor and Kevin Mintzer, characterized the outcome as a “complete sellout of the Weinstein survivors.”
New York Attorney General Letitia James and Chicago attorney Elizabeth Fegan announced the settlement on Tuesday. If the deal is approved by the courts, the plaintiffs are each eligible for between $7,500 and $750,000 from the compensation fund, the New York Times reported. The accusers will also be released from any NDAs they signed, according to James’ announcement.
“We fought a long and grueling battle in the courtroom,” said plaintiff Caitlin Dulany in a press release. “Harvey avoided accountability for decades, and it was a powerful moment for us to band together and demand justice.”
